1. Canadian Import Requirements
The Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Regulations require that all vehicles imported into Canada comply, at the time of importation, with the Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards in effect on the date the vehicle was manufactured. The Vehicle must bear a statement of compliance label affixed by the original manufacturer that has not been altered, and the certification from the original manufacturer must still be on the vehicle. Vehicles manufactured for sale in countries other than Canada and the United States do not comply with the requirements of the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Act. They CANNOT be altered to comply and should not be imported into Canada, unless:
- 15 years old or older (excluding buses);
- A bus manufactured before January 1, 1971; or entering Canada temporarily.
If the vehicle you are planning to import into Canada is less than 15 years old or a bus manufactured on or after January 1, 1971, you must prove that your vehicle qualifies for one of the above exemptions by producing Sales receipts, registration or de-registration documents. As the importer, before you import your vehicle, you must contact Transport Canada's Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) to ensure that it is admissible for importation and can be modified to meet the Canadian standards, after you import it.
The RIV is an agency contracted by Transport Canada to administer a national program to ensure that imported vehicles are brought into
compliance with Canada's safety standards. If you are considering importing a vehicle originally manufactured to meet United States safety and emission standards, contact the R.I.V on the details below.

2. Car shipping options to Canada
There are many options available when you are shipping your car to Canada depending on the type of car you are sending and your personal requirements. For this reason, we offer all of our customer's professional guidance and expert advice, from your first contact through to your car arriving in Canada. Your car can be shipped to Canada in its own sealed container or we can consolidate your car with your household effects inside a sealed container. This combined service entails carefully loading & securing your car, building a purpose built frame, over crating vehicle, and safely loading your household effects inside the container. The recommended types of containers available for shipment of cars to Canada are 20ft containers and 40ft containers.
Option A: CONTAINER AT RESIDENCE (CAR & HOUSEHOLD EFFECTS)
If you wish to combine your household removal and your car inside your own container to Canada, we would position a container at your residence on your removal day and carefully load, secure and over crate your vehicle as described above. The remaining space inside the container would be utilised by loading and stowing your professionally packed household effects. Your container will be sealed at your door with a customs type seal, your sole use container would then be returned to the UK port and custom terminal ready for loading on to the vessel for shipment to Canada.

A container can either be positioned at your residence, PSS warehouse or shipping line container depot and shipped through to Canada. (We can provide you with separate quotations for the above options & can include either, handout of your car at our Canadian warehouse including Customs clearance or handout at the port terminal including customs clearance)

3. Payment of Duties and Taxes
Your vehicle will also be subject to provincial or territorial sales tax and safety requirements. Check with the motor vehicle department of the province or territory to which you are entering. Used or second-hand motor vehicles are subject to the payment of applicable customs duty, the goods and services tax, and other taxes imposed under the Excise Tax Act.
The rate of duty applicable to used motor vehicles imported from the United States will depend upon the origin of the vehicle. Vehicles of United States origin will be subject to the United States Tariff rate. Vehicles which originated in other countries and which are not entitled to the benefit of the United States Tariff will be subject to the Most-Favoured-Nation Tariff rate when imported from the United States.
All vehicles, regardless of their origin, remain subject to the goods and services tax and other taxes imposed under the Excise Tax Act.

4. Transit cover for your car to Canada
Every precaution is taken to ensure your motor car arrives in Canada safely and in the same condition, that it left the UK. Nevertheless, it is advisable to cover your motor car while it is in transit. We have specifically designed a transit cover protection for your motor car, which covers major risks of loss or damage. The transit cover is backed by AXA Corporate Solutions Assurance, and is based on the conditions recommended by the British Association of Removers LTD. The protection commences as soon as we take receipt of your motor car at your residence, PSS warehouse or container base. When we take receipt of your motor car, we will complete a car condition report detailing the pre shipment condition of your motor car.
5. Transit Times & booking your car to Canada
We offer regular shipping schedules for cars to Canada and the approximate transit times to Canada are 3-5 weeks, once you have placed a booking for your motor car to be shipped to Canada we will acknowledge your booking and confirm your vessel, sailing date and arrival date in Canada. We also offer you the facility of tracking your shipment online via our website. We will prepare and send your shipping documents so they are ready to be presented to Canadian Customs and Quarantine.

6. Steam Cleaning of cars to Canada & Quarantine Inspection
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) requires all cars imported into Canada are cleaned prior to shipment and will be subject to inspection upon arrival. This is to prevent the entry of diseases, noxious weeds and insect pests into Canada; consequently we recommend that all motor cars are steam cleaned before they are loaded, paying special attention to the underneath of the motor car (wheels, tyres, wheel arches, engine compartment). This requirement applies to all used vehicles, regardless of origin.
For more information please contact the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) on the below details.
If accepted this may save you a lot of time and additional expense. Unfortunately if they are not satisfied that the motor car is in an acceptable condition to be used on the Canadian roads they may insist that steam cleaning or fumigation be carried out again which will incur an additional fee. The fees are assessed locally and dependant on the condition of your motor car.
