We offer and highly recommend a FREE NO OBLIGATION survey of your removal requirements between 3 and 6 months prior to your intended move to America. One of our experienced estimators will visit your home to assess the volume and packing requirements of the household goods you are intending to take to America. At this stage you can request a second estimate which excludes certain items, thereby enabling you to ascertain the cost effectiveness of sending those items, customers have found this part of our international removal service very useful.
Coordinating your International Removal
After your pre-move survey we will automatically assign two of our friendly coordinators who will control all aspects of your removal to America from start to finish. Your Move coordinators will be on hand to guide you through the process using their extensive knowledge and experience in international removals to America.
Packing and the Removal
The export packing and loading of your possessions is probably the most important part of the whole International removal process, it is important that the removal company you choose will protect your fragile household items using the correct export grade of industry approved packing materials. It is also important that they have highly skilled and fully trained export packers.
If you select our sole use container service we will deliver the container to your door, pack and load your container at your residence in your presence, seal the container and it will be shipped directly from your door to America. If you have selected our
'share a container' service, we will pack and measure your consignment at your residence and return this to our warehouse for loading in the next groupage container to your America destination. Shipping to America
Once your shipping container has been loaded it is secured using a customs type seal and transported to the UK port ready for loading onto the vessel and shipment to America.
When shipping to America the approximate shipping times will vary depending on the area of America you are moving to, ie the east coast or West coast of America. Transit times also differ based on whether you have a sole use or shared container. The estimated time of arrival for full containers is 2-6 weeks and 4-10 weeks for share a container service up to arrival main ports in America. Delivery for onward transportation to inland destinations may add to the above transit times.
Shipping to America Quote
When you arrive in America
We will contact you before your container arrives at the port in America, this is to ascertain your requirements regarding delivery, if you are not ready to take delivery we can arrange storage at an extremely preferential rate. Before leaving the UK we would have provided you with America Customs forms which must be completed prior to your departure from the UK and must be returned to your PSS move coordinator. All goods which arrive into America are subject to America Customs clearance & Quarantine. Customs clearance will usually take between 7 and 14 days.
When your shipment arrives in America we will arrange for your personal effects or household effects to be customs cleared by America Customs. To assist us with your clearance you will be required to complete a US customs form 3299 (Importer's declaration)
a supplemental declaration form RC-159 if you have not established a residence at the time of your entry, and a U.S. customs service supplemental declaration for unaccompanied personal and household effects. This should be completed in the UK before your
departure for America. You must be in the country at the time of arrival of your goods
If you are shipping a firearm, you must obtain an ATF (alcohol, firearms, and tobacco) permit before shipping. N.B. Many shipping lines are now refusing to carry shotguns, please speak to PSS for further details.
All goods entering America are subject to Duty and tax however, a personal or household effects shipment will qualify for free entry of Duty and tax if your goods have:
- Been owned and used for 12 months or more by you.
- Returning US Citizen who have been living outside of America for 12 months or more.

It is essential that you are given the correct advice before you decide to ship certain items. Please ensure that all Garden Tools, Garden Furniture, Garden Toys and outdoor sports equipment have been cleaned before exporting them to America a full list of items subject to inspection is contained in the PSS moving to America brochure, a free copy of which is available upon request.
Delivery & Unpacking in America
If you are shipping in a full container then wherever possible your effects will be delivered directly from your shipping container. If this is not possible, or you are sharing a container then your goods will be loaded onto a removal vehicle and transported to your residence for delivery. Our unloading crew will place your items in the rooms of your choice and unwrap and remove the packing material from your furniture.
