Average removal/transportation times to Italy from the UK

NB: These are average transportation times – actual time will depend on a number of factors.

With the UK leaving the EU following Brexit, some of the procedures for moving to Italy and Europe from the UK have now changed.

From 1^st January 2021 new paperwork, documentation and customs requirements apply. Your Move Manager will be able to advise you on the latest situation and guide you through completing any necessary documentation.

We will take care of the customs clearance on your behalf, so you will need not worry. It is, however, imperative that you have the correct documents in place. Our move managers will be pleased to guide you through everything that is required.

You will need to ensure you have the right residence requirements, visa or passport depending on the nature of your stay. This will vary depending on whether you are a UK or EU citizen, or have permanent or temporary residency in Italy.

Most people who move to Italy use our part load removals service which is handy for small removals. Your belongings are loaded onto a removals van or larger European road train to be sent via road freight to your destination.

This enables you to share the costs and benefit from economies of scale – even with small removals. This service does however take longer to arrive.

Alternatively, if you have a large move to Italy, you can use our dedicated or full load service. You will have your own lorry with crew. This allows for greater flexibility and is a lot faster.

Like most countries, Italy has a list of products and goods that are either prohibited or have restrictions on importation.

We highly recommend you check the FIDI Customs Guide for information on what can and cannot be imported into the country.

Failure to do so can result in your items being delayed in customs, refused entry or you may have to pay fines or fees for disposal of items.

Your Move Manager will advise you on what you’ll need to do to prepare items for moving day, including which items need cleaning and disinfecting.

Please advise us beforehand if you decide to take additional items so we can ensure that they will fit on the container and also if necessary update your quote.

On moving day our professional and friendly international movers and packers will take care of everything for you. Typically for a full house overseas removal, they begin packing furniture on day one and your shipping container will arrive for loading sometime on day two.

For part container loads we will take your packed belongings to our depot for loading onto the container.

Our specially trained and experienced export packers will ensure all your belongings are speedily but carefully packed before being loaded into your container. Over 1,000 miles by road from the UK to Italy is a long journey so higher standards and different techniques are needed than those used by a standard domestic removal company.

For delicate items and antiques, we have even higher-grade materials including custom-made wooden crates if required.

It is recommended to use professional international removalists who are specially trained and experienced in export wrapping and packing for overseas furniture removals.

However, we do have an option available if you want to pack your belongings yourself.

We are able to help you send vehicles overseas including cars, motorcycles, motorhomes and caravans to Italy. They can be transported in the same vehicle or container as your household goods or sent separately.

When your belongings in arrive in Italy they will need to pass through customs. Requirements will vary depending on whether you are a British citizen, a non-EU citizen, an EU citizen or a national returning home.

Fortunately, as part of our service, we will handle the customs clearance process on your behalf.

For household removals of personal effects, depending on your status, you may not have to pay customs duty and taxes on all items.

There may be some additional charges such as inspection fees charges you need to pay to the local customs authorities. These vary and so are not included in your quote.

There will be some forms you need to complete and other documentation you need to provide as evidence.

This is not a problem as all we will require is a contact address and contact details. The delivery address can be advised at a later date or when you arrive.

If required, we can also arrange storage of your household goods and personal effects in Italy whilst you arrange your new home. Once you’re ready our local movers will be able to deliver your belongings.
