How Do I Qualify for Tax Relief for My Delivery?
You may qualify for GST relief when moving to Singapore with used household goods and personal effects. Singapore Customs normally requires that:
- You are transferring your place of residence to Singapore.
- You own the goods and have used them for at least 3 months.
- The goods are imported within 6 months of your first arrival in Singapore.
- You do not sell, give away or dispose of the goods within 3 months of import.
- You provide supporting documents, such as your passport and proof of your move to Singapore, which may include an Employment Pass, Dependant’s Pass, Student’s Pass or Ministry of Manpower approval.
For unaccompanied sea or air shipments, GST relief must be applied for before the goods arrive in Singapore. If relief is not granted, GST will be payable at the prevailing rate.
Some goods, including alcohol, tobacco, motor vehicles and commercial goods, are not eligible for this relief.
Customs Guide for Sending Personal Effects to Singapore
All goods that arrive in Singapore are subject to customs clearance. We will submit all the relevant paperwork required to obtain the release of your goods, this can sometimes take up to 7 days. This may take longer in busier months but you don’t need to be present or in the country for clearance.
How Does Delivery to My Address in Singapore Work?
Once your goods have been released by Singaporean customs we will contact you to arrange a suitable delivery day.
Once we’ve received clearance of your goods we will either deliver your sea freight container directly to your new home or it will be delivered in a separate vehicle. This all depends on the type of shipment you are sending. Our unloading crew will place your items in the rooms of your choice and unwrap and remove the packing material from any furniture.
Do I Need Insurance or Shipment Protection Cover?
When you book with PSS, your shipment is covered under the BAR Advanced Payment Guarantee Scheme.
However, it is highly advisable to take out shipment protection cover before sending items to Singapore. Although problems are unlikely, it is still wise to have cover when sending goods overseas, especially for items of significant financial value.
PSS International offers very flexible Shipment Protection Plans. You can cover your whole shipment or choose the individual items you wish to cover. Your PSS Move Manager can explain the different options available and guide you through completing the Shipment Protection Valuation form.
