What is the Malta Address Format When Sending From the UK?

Sending a package to Malta from the UK follows a European-style format, but it’s important to include all necessary details clearly. Here’s what to include:

  • Recipient’s full name

  • Street address (including flat or house number)

  • Locality or village/town

  • Postcode (a 3-letter + 4-number format, e.g., VLT 1117)

  • Country – clearly write “MALTA” in capital letters on the final line

What Can and Can't You Send to Malta?

  • Electrical and Machine appliances may require import approval and it is imperative that you have the original invoice.
  • Telecommunication devices such as mobile phones, fax and answering machines will need import approval prior to shipment, please ensure that this is supplied to your move manager prior to arrival to ensure that we start this process early.
  • CD’s, DVD’s and Video Tapes will be subject to censorship by the Government film censor board, this can take up to 2 – 3 weeks before these items are returned.

Other Prohibited and Restricted goods to Malta include:

  • Alcoholic beverages (6 bottles)
  • Drugs,
  • Firearms,
  • Pornographic material,
  • Indecent or obscene material featuring children,
  • Flick knives and other offensive weapons,
  • Counterfeit currency,

How Do I Qualify for Tax Relief for My Delivery?

A summary of tax relief qualifications for household goods shipped to Malta is below. For full details, visit Malta Customs or consult your Move Manager.

To Qualify for VAT and Duty Relief as a Non-Resident:

  • You must be transferring your normal place of residence to Malta from a non-EU country.

  • You must have resided outside the EU for at least 12 continuous months prior to moving.

  • Goods must be for personal use and not intended for resale.

  • You must import your household goods within 12 months of establishing residency in Malta.

  • You will need to provide:

    • Proof of residence abroad (e.g. utility bills, rental contracts)

    • Proof of transfer of residence to Malta (e.g. residence permit, rental agreement, employment contract)

    • A detailed inventory of the goods being imported

Important Notes:

  • VAT in Malta is typically charged at 18%.

  • If tax relief is not granted before clearance, you may be required to pay VAT and customs duties based on the declared value of your goods.

  • You should apply for tax relief prior to the goods arriving, where possible, to avoid delays or unexpected charges.

Customs Guide for shipping personal effects to Malta

We will handle the customs clearance process for you, please note that all shipments will be subject to a 100% examination upon arrival. As previously mentioned we will touch base with you prior to arrival to ensure that we have all the relevant documentation and contact details.

If you are transporting new goods it is important that you declare these well in advance to avoid delays.

Free entry of Duty will apply if you meet the following:

  • Free entry for household goods that have been owned and used for more than 6 months, this applies to first time immigrants or returning Malta residents that have lived outside Malta for minimum of 12 months.

Duty free entry only applies to First time immigrants or Malta Residents that have lived outside Malta for 12 months or more. However this only allows one duty free sea freight shipment and one Airfreight shipment to Malta.

  • To qualify for free entry you must not import your goods any earlier than 1 month prior to your arrival and no later than 6 months after your arrival in Malta.
  • Duty Free entry applies to Malta residents that have lived outside Malta for more than 12 months.
  • Duty free entry applies only to you importing one electrical appliance per category. For example 1 x toaster or 1 x kettle

How Does Delivery to My Address in Malta work?
