Are there additional charges?

We provide a very flexible shipment protection cover through Basil Fry & Company – the UK’s leading insurance broker for international removals and shipping:

• Our policy is quick and easy to set up, simply complete our Shipment Protection valuation form with the items you would like to cover and their values.
• Removal (we pack) consignments cover costs 3.5% of the total insurable value you declare.
• Vehicle shipments cover costs 2% of the vehicles declared value.
• Self-Pack (you pack) consignments cover cost 5% of the total insurable value you declare.
• Baggage/Airfreight consignments, which are owner packed, will cost 5% of the total insurable value you declare.

Just like any other country, Ireland has its own list of restricted and prohibited items that cannot be imported or require special permissions when relocating or shipping personal belongings. To ensure a smooth move to Ireland, it’s essential to check these regulations carefully and take the appropriate steps before shipping your goods.

Restricted imports into Ireland that may require prior approval include:

• Alcohol – Subject to duty and VAT; limits apply. Special rules exist for diplomats.

• Firearms and ammunition – Require a temporary importation licence prior to arrival. Must be handed over to police for local licensing.

• Pets (dogs and cats) – Must either:

  • Have a valid EU Pet Passport, or

  • Be covered by an Import Licence from the Irish Department of Agriculture.

• Motor vehicles – Must be owned and used abroad for at least 6 months. Additional paperwork including TOR1, purchase invoice, and insurance is required.

• Articles of gold or silver plate – Require a statutory declaration and import approval (Form CU.56).

• Antiques and works of art – If imported for resale, these are treated as commercial imports and are subject to duty and VAT.

• New furniture and household items – Subject to full VAT (23%) and duty if not previously owned and used for 6+ months.

• Endangered species or products (e.g., ivory, animal skins, tusks) – Require a valid CITES certificate for import.

Prohibited imports to Ireland

• Narcotics or illegal drugs

• Pornographic materials

• Explosives and fireworks

• Meat and meat products

• Live or dead animals (birds and poultry)

• Live plants

• Hay and straw, including those used as packing material

• Endangered species or products without appropriate certification (e.g., ivory, skins)

• Firearms, unless pre-approved by licence

Importing Antiques and Artwork into Ireland

Antiques and artwork can be imported to Ireland, but different rules apply based on their purpose (private use vs. resale):

• Personal collections may be eligible for duty-free import with appropriate documentation.

• Commercial imports (i.e., for resale) are subject to standard customs duty and VAT.

• If claiming an item as an antique (typically over 100 years old), it’s advisable to have proof of age or value from a recognised expert or institution.

When relocating to Ireland, your personal effects and household goods will need to pass through Irish customs clearance before being released for delivery to your new home.

Ireland’s Customs Duties, Taxes and Other Fees

In most cases, used household and personal effects can be imported into Ireland duty-free, provided the following conditions are met:

• Items must have been owned and used by you abroad for at least 6 months.

• They must be for your continued personal use and not for resale.

• You must have resided outside Ireland for a continuous period of at least 12 months prior to your move.

• You must be taking up permanent residence in Ireland (minimum stay of 185 days).

However, if these conditions are not met—or if you’re importing new goods, items for a secondary residence, or commercial shipments—then customs duty and VAT (usually 23%) will apply. These fees are payable locally before your goods can be released.

Managing the Customs Clearance Process

• Which documents are required (e.g. Customs Form 1076, Transfer of Residence form (TOR1), and proof of residency/employment)

• How to prepare and pack your belongings to meet Irish customs expectations

Please note: All Transfer of Residence applications must be submitted at least 2 weeks prior to the shipment’s arrival into Dublin Port, Rosslare Port, Dublin Airport or Shannon Airport.
