How Do I Qualify for Tax Relief for My Delivery?
The Canary Islands are part of the EU customs territory but have a separate indirect tax system from mainland Spain. Instead of Spanish VAT, imports may be subject to IGIC and, in some cases, other Canary Islands import taxes.
To Qualify for IGIC and Tax Relief as a Non-Resident:
You may be eligible for tax relief on personal effects if:
-
You are moving your normal place of residence to the Canary Islands from a non-EU country.
-
Your goods are used personal belongings, not intended for resale.
-
You have resided outside the Canary Islands or the EU for at least 12 months prior to import.
-
You can provide proof of your relocation, such as:
-
A work contract or job offer in the Canary Islands.
-
A residence permit or NIE (foreigner identity number).
-
An inventory of the personal effects being shipped.
-
Evidence the goods have been in your possession for at least 6 months.
-
To Qualify for IGIC and Tax Relief as a Returning Resident:
If you are a returning resident (Spanish national or foreign resident of the Canary Islands), you may qualify for relief if:
-
You have lived outside the Canary Islands or the EU for over 12 months.
-
The items are for personal use, not commercial purposes.
-
You can provide:
-
Proof of past residence abroad (e.g. visa, tenancy agreements, employment contract).
-
Your NIE number and re-registration documentation in the Canary Islands.
-
A declaration that the items are for your own use and not for resale.
-
If the necessary documentation is not submitted before customs clearance, IGIC at 7% (or applicable rate) will be charged on the declared value of your goods. This is based on the customs valuation, not the insured value.
For more detailed and up-to-date information, please consult the Canary Islands customs authority (Agencia Tributaria Canaria).
Customs Guide for Sending Personal Effects to the Canary Islands
All goods that arrive in the Canary Islands are subject to customs clearance procedures. Our team will handle and submit all the necessary documentation to facilitate the release of your personal effects.
Clearance can take up to 7 days, although this may be longer during peak periods. You do not need to be present or in the Canary Islands for the customs process to be completed; we manage this entirely on your behalf.
How Does Delivery to My Address in the Canary Islands Work?
Once your goods have been released by Canary Islands customs, we will contact you to arrange a suitable delivery day.
Once we’ve received clearance of your goods we will either deliver your sea freight container directly to your new home or it will be delivered in a separate vehicle. This all depends on the type of shipment you are sending. Our unloading crew will place your items in the rooms of your choice and unwrap and remove the packing material from any furniture.
Do I Need Shipping Insurance or Shipment Protection Cover?
When you book with PSS, your shipment is covered under the BAR Advanced Payment Guarantee Scheme.
However, it is highly recommended to also take out shipping insurance or shipment protection cover before you ship your personal effects or household goods to the Canary Islands.
Although it is unlikely to encounter issues when shipping items from the UK to the Canary Islands, it is still wise to have shipment protection when sending goods overseas, especially for items of significant financial value.
PSS International presents very flexible Shipment Protection Plans. You can cover your whole shipment or choose specific items you wish to protect.
Your PSS Move Manager will explain the different options available and guide you through completing the Shipment Protection Valuation form.
