What is customs duty?
Customs duty is a tax imposed by the destination country on imported goods. For household personal effects owned and used for at least 12 months prior to the move, most countries offer a duty-free exemption for residents relocating. New or unused items, gifts, and goods purchased specifically for export may attract customs duty. You can check the relevant FIDI Customs Guide for information on the country you are moving to.

PSS Tip: Most of your household goods will be duty-free when moving abroad, provided they are used items owned for at least 12 months. Declare new items separately — attempting to hide new goods among used personal effects is a customs offence.
