What is duty free?
Duty free is the right to import goods without paying customs duty or import tax. For international removals, “duty-free” refers to the personal effects exemption. The conditions typically require that:
- The goods have been owned and used for at least 12 months (six months for Canada)
- The importer is moving to the destination country to reside (not just visiting)
- The goods are for personal use, not for resale
New, unused, or gift items do not typically qualify and may attract customs duty.
