What is a shipping container?

A shipping container is the large steel boxes used to transport goods by sea freight. Two standard sizes are used in household removals:
- 20ft container — approximately 5.9m long × 2.35m wide × 2.39m high internally; holds approximately 1000 cubic feet (33 CBM); suitable for a three-bedroom home or smaller
- 40ft container — approximately 12.0m long × 2.35m wide × 2.39m high internally; holds approximately 2000 cubic feet (67 CBM); suitable for a four-bedroom home or larger
- 40ft high cube container — same length but with 30cm additional height (2.70m internally); approximately 2600 cubic feet (76 CBM); useful for larger moves including cars
