What is volumetric weight?
Volumetric weight is a way of working out the space your shipment takes up on an aircraft, not just how heavy it is. For air freight, the airline or carrier will compare the actual weight of your goods with the volumetric weight, then charge based on whichever is higher (the chargeable weight). This is usually calculated by multiplying the length, width, and height in centimetres, then dividing by 5000. So if an item is large but relatively light, the air freight cost may be based on the space it takes up rather than its physical weight.
