South Australia – the driest state in the driest continent on earth!  Its capital Adelaide is, not surprisingly, also Australia’s driest capital city.  The warm, dry Mediterranean climate however is perfect beach weather and five of the best are all within an hour’s drive of the CBD.  Living in Adelaide in fact offers the convenience of relaxed, laid-back city life close to beautiful beaches.

Where to live in Adelaide?

Most Adelaide suburbs are family-friendly, close to a beach or the Adelaide Hills, and have excellent amenities.

For coastal living, you can’t beat Aldinga Beach and Welland.  Unley is close to the CBD.  Millswood and Eden Hills are in the Adelaide Hills area to the south of the CBD whilst Burnside is in the eastern foothills.

Glenelg and Fulham Gardens are great lifestyle suburbs in Adelaide’s west between the CBD and the Gulf of St Vincent.

Hackham (close to the McLaren Vale wine region) and Sellecks Beach (on the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula) are southern coastal suburbs.

Where to live in Adelaide?

If you don’t want to live in Adelaide, South Australia has a number of large rural centres and historic towns.  Port Augusta, Mount Gambier, Whyalla, and Port Lincoln are major regional centres and serve as important road, railway and shipping hubs.

Victor Harbour is the picturesque administrative centre of the Fleurieu Peninsula south of Adelaide. 

For those with German ancestry, the small town of Hahndorf serves as a reminder of the large number of pioneering German settlers who settled in the state in the 19^th century.

A more rustic destination, Burra is a historic agricultural and tourist town in the state’s mid-north.

Historic Gawler is the state’s oldest rural settlement and today its rich heritage is preserved in the colonial architecture, museums and heritage collections.

Murray Bridge is another historic town named after the local bridge that crosses the Murray River near the town.
